I rang in the New Year with my sister and some friends in the Twin Cities area. We actually spent New Years Eve at a low key house party but had fun playing games and having a few drinks.
Friday night a few of us went out to the Local, which is one of my favorite places to go in downtown MPLS. I tried the Big Ginger, which is what they are known for and fell head over heals in love. mmm... so tasty and refreshing! (two shots of Jameson whiskey, ginger ale, ice, and lemon and lime wedges in a 16 oz. glass)
The last couple of days I didn't have access to a gym and only had the option of the treadmill at my sister's house, but my knees were screaming "no". So, this morning, my plan was to head to the downtown Y and bike for about 45 minutes and then swim 20 minutes. It's been weeks since I last got into the pool.
Once I got there, I noticed how crappy the bikes were and didn't want to ride anymore. I really didn't want to run since my last couple of runs weren't the prettiest - leaving my knee feeling a bit tight. However, I ran/walked a couple miles, stretched a lot and then swam 1000M.
Is it bad that I am already re-thinking my goals/races for 2010?
My goal for January is to really get back into bodypump class, as well as trying some yoga and pilates classes. I am also going to begin doing my tripower routine. I will keep running, biking, and swimming, but nothing too crazy. My focus needs to be strengthening and stretching this month.
I won't be making any decisions in regards to any long distance races or challenges until February.
How is the New Year treating you?

i just took a look at the races for the summer and need to pick which ones i will be doing.
i really want to get a yoga class in my workout as well but i just can't give up other stuff, not sure i should do a dvd on my own as i have never done yoga and would probably benefit from an instructor.
Trifitmom -- I just read an article in Women running magazine about post run yoga! It is designed to be done after a run so you don't need to give up a workout!! I am starting it tomorrow!
I am all signed up for 3 of my races this summer -- still trying to figure out the rest of the year!! It has been months since I have been in the pool :)
I know what you mean about the strenghtening and stretching my knees have been whispering to me lately that kind of "hey, you better start paying attention to me or I'll start talking and screaming". I really would like to take up swimming this year. You have some good things in mind for 2010. Best Wishes.
Sometimes changing things up are exactly what (we) need! It sounds great and you can think about longer distances later on....
Happy New Year!
Focus on strengthening and stretching sounds like a great idea. I really need to get in the habit of stretching both before and after runs, I'm soo bad about it!
My 2010 will be focused on established a solid aerobic base, core strength, and race alot.
And reassessing your goals is never a bad thing...good practice, actually.
Good luck with 2010...enjoy it!!
Sorry your knees are giving you issues!
Your January plan sounds right on.
So far my January has been far too cold. Yeah, I know, I've become a weather wimp. ;o)
Happy New Year!
New Year is treating me mighty fine so far lady. Keep Warm and your goals for 10' look mighty fine too. :)
I don't think there is anything wrong with reconsidering your goals based on what your body needs right now. If you need to concentrate on strengthening and stretching, then do that...it will only help you with your later goals.
Sounds like a great New Years! My hat os off to you for even going out your front door....the temperatures you are experiencing right now are ridiculous!
I like the new look of the blog. Teal is my favorite color. :-)
And no, I don't think it's bad that you're rethinking your goals/races for 2010. I would rather rethink the goals than end up with a permenant injury that doesn't allow me to enjoy running at all ever again. It'll all work out...
So far I like 2010. I don't think there is anything wrong with adjusting your goals, they are your goals after all! Good luck!
I think being flexible with the years goals is good. I have noticed that running on the treadmill makes my knees and IT bands hurt...i wish it would snow less so I could run outside more!
This time of the year is the best time to be flexible! My year is starting off well. I'm going to cut back a bit this week then kick off my first week of the actual training plan next week!
I think it's totally OK to want to reassess your goals based on how you're feeling. Focus on the strength and flexibility stuff now and then see how you feel before setting the race calendar.
YOur Goals are your Goials and can be adjusted at any point as you see fit. It does you no good to push on something where you may end up injured.
STRENGTH and STRETCH :) Good goals for sure.
My New YEar is great, although I should probably get to work... UGH!!
I like your focus for the month. Try some new things... you never know what you'll like! :)
strengthening and stretching are key.
i haven't even started thinking about races for the year...
Oh wow you are amazing.. the thought of doing a tri scares me.. I just saw your table on the left and WOW... amazing.
Thank for for your very welcomed comment. I've missed the camaraderie of blogging and the motivation triathletes like you fire up. Not sure what 2010 will bring race wise, but I love the idea of fitting in more yoga/stretching!! Don't you feel amazing with a little yoga first thing in the a.m.?
There's nothing wrong with reassessing goals. I think that's a sign you're listening to your body and know what it needs.
I've spent the first days of the new year battling a cold. Ugh.
