Freakin' Fantabulous

I still am having a hard time fighting this "flu-like" stuff. Like I said before, Friday I really had the aches and chills, and slept for about 16 hours. Saturday and I Sunday I felt better. This morning, however, I woke up feeling neasuous and have on and off all day. My aunt, a nurse, says my symptoms all point to .... gasteroenteritis .... basically the flu.

This is rediculous.

Yesterday I did a 5K in honor of Non-runner Nancy and it wasn't pretty. After the 2nd mile it all went downhill and there was definitely knee pain and discomfort. I have made the decision to cut out running for the next week. Period.

I am trying to get in to see a specialist.

I realized how hard it is to get in to see an orthopedic under my health care providers, after my school contract hours. You see, we are short subs, and they are really encouraging us to do doctor appointments outside of work hours. Easier said than done. The earliest appointment I could get after 3pm was March 30th. The earliest appointment during the day is March 12th.

I am going to check into seeing an orthopedic outside my health care providers, the cost difference and such, and see if I can get in earlier. Others have also suggested seeing a physical therapist too.... any thoughts from you out there?

I feel for you. Literally. I tripped over an obstacle in an extreme off-track event back in November and my knee hasn't been the same since. It was manageable for a while, but lately it's unbearable. Not so much when I run...but afterwards or before. It's horrible.

I talked to my dad, who is a doctor, and he didn't suggest seeing a doctor yet...but I think you're right to have it checked out-insurance and school issues aside!

Good luck!

I had a hard time getting in too. What's up with that?!?! The healthcare system sucks!

Oh no. Feel better soon!

I don't have much advice for ya. I tend to avoid the doctor as much as I can. It has not been the best choice many times.

Hope you feel better. Take care of yourself. Try the physical therapist. I did, for my back and it definitely helped.

gasteroenteritis does not really sound like the flu, haha :)

Physiotherapists spend a good chunk of every day dealing with runners who have sore knees. I think that's the place to start.

They will probably be able to diagnose the problem and help you put together a plan to heal up... hopefully no knife req.

Good luck!

Foam roller isn't helping? It sounds like IT band syndrome. I had it for a while and then starting rolling it out, it hasn't completely gone away (I felt a little tweaking last night) but the foam roller has helped in a tremendous way.

I hope you kick this cold soon. Smart to take some time off from running. Let your body heal.

Me and you both sister. I'm calling the orthopedic guy today. I'm crossing my fingers that I can get something within the next two weeks. If knees weren't necessary, I'd totally chop mine off lol.

i know what you mean. after not running last week for my taper, and not running yet this week for the flu, my knees are finally letting me walk down stairs again.

I've read that a lot of knee issues are from the knee being pulled by other muscles. You probably should see a PT or ART therapist. Hope you solve it soon!

Well, not pretty is how I ran them too, so thank you for running for me when I couldn't. I really appreciate it!!

Can you get an early morning appt and come in a little late? Sometimes they start pretty early. Lunch hour? I don't think it is bad advice to start with PT either if you can get in and get a referral to one (if you need a referral).

Take care of yourself.

Knee pain, how frustrating! If you are looking to get some direction a little quicker, I'm with Wes. A PT or a chiro who does ART can help out a lot. My knee has been bugging me the past two weeks and I've been to see my chiro about four times for ART. The knee problem isn't actually caused by the knee but by some really tight hip flexors that throw everything out of alignment. The ART has helped a lot so I really would recommend it as a starting point.

I hope you're able to see someone real soon!

The cost is probably pretty high to see someone outside your coverage since time with a specialist can be pretty spendy.

Hope you feel better soon!

Oh, no, that's too bad! Hope you get to see a PT or someone soon so that you can get back out there!
