Knee

I tested out the knee again. I did have a 5 miler on the schedule today, but knew that if the knee was going to bother me, I was going to quit right away.

Overall, I was able to run with little to no discomfort, for the first couple of miles. From there on out, I did a lot of walking. It just felt like my knee was getting really tight, causing the knee cap to not track properly. This is a bit of progress from my attempt to run Thursday, however. I came home, popped a few ibuprofen, iced, and stretched.

I know I need to take it easy still. I have plenty of time to build up my long runs. My plan is to take a handful of days off of running completely. I will swim tomorrow, rest Monday, short bike Tuesday, swim Wednesday and then try to run again Thursday. In the meantime, I will continue doing my knee strengthening exercises 2-3 times per day.

Taryn recommended a yoga video that works on knees, so I will look into that too. I know that my knees are the weekest/most injury prone parts of my body, so I really need to work on strengthening them.

Have a great weekend y'all!

Strengthening exercises

Sometimes I think I make a mountain out of a mole hill with some of my "injuries". Maybe I am just being extra cautious. I don't know.

Yesterday's issue with my right knee left me worried. Worried about my long run I had planned for this weekend. Worried about the half marathon. Yeah, the half marathon that is in 3 months from Monday. You would think I would be happy that I still have three months to prepare, giving myself some much needed rest before building those miles back up again. That however, isn't the case.

Last night I spent a good amount of time doing some strengthening exercises while I was watching some basketball on tv. I found this really good website that talks about the knee and different kinds of exercises you can do. After doing a handful last night, my knee was better this morning. The ultimate test was going down, and most importantly up the stairs. No pain. No issues. All day my knee was fine. Absolutely fine.

Was it a fluke?

I did a couple strengthening exercises on and off while I was at work today. At least the ones that I was able to do without having to lie on the floor. After work, I wanted to test it out on the treadmill. I told myself if it started to bother me, I would quit. 'Nuff said. Sure enough, it did bother me a bit... but not as bad as Wednesday. After a mile I called it quits and did some lifting and more leg strengthening.

Grr.

Tomorrow I will hit the pool for a nice speed session, giving my knee another day. I will just continue to do the strengthening exercises multiple time a day, and hope for the best.

One day at a time.

Self diagnosis, per say?

I think I am finally starting to feel better. I am not 100% just yet, but only a stuffy nose today is a helluva lot better than what I dealt with the past 5 days. I really should have taken a sick day Monday or Tuesday because they were both brutal. I was miserable and I felt like I was useless to the kids. I left work yesterday shortly after I was done seeing kids at 2:30 and went straight to my bed. I slept for a good couple of hours, layed around all night and drank water like it was going out of style.

This morning I got up for a nice run. I wanted to test out the legs again to see if that weird twingy thing in my left leg/shin/ankle area was still present. No problem with that. I was feeling very queesy and struggled through the run in that aspect. On top of that, my right knee is bothering me a bit. I am having a bit of tracking issues.... looking at all the symptoms, I think I might be suffering from Patella Tracking Disorder. For reals.

Looking back on my half marathon training a year ago, I didn't really deal with this too much. I have in the past, when I first started running. The only difference between training last year and this year, there was regular strength training incorporated then. I need to get this back into my schedule. Bad.

Do you incorporate strength training into your routing? And if so, what does your week usually look like?

Off to a good start

October is off to a great start. I spent almost an hour lifting and working on the abs yesterday after work, and then almost an hour in the pool this morning. Cha-ching. Tomorrow I will be getting up early for a run; hopefully something longer than 3 miles.

As much as I love lifting, it can be soooo time consuming and I am looking into different forms of strength training. Kelsalynn has been doing a lot with CrossFit and I am quite intrigued. I will be looking to her for further information and such. It's sounds like she knows her shiznit!

Tomorrow the kiddo's don't have school, but us educators are taking part in our first Staff Development day for the school year. yeaaaahhh. Can you sense my excitement? Maybe it has a bit to do with the fact that I will be presenting information on RtI and helping my team inform our teachers about the changes we will be making at our school with interventions and such. yeeeaaahhh.

...Today's Breast Cancer Awareness information...

The most common risk factors:
  1. Sex. The highest risk factor for breast cancer is being female; the disease is about 100 times more common among women.
  2. Age. The risk of breast cancer increases as a woman grows older. The risk is especially high for women age 60 and older. Breast cancer is uncommon in women younger than age 35, although it does occur. There is some evidence to suggest young African American women are at greater risk for breast cancer than young Caucasian women.
  3. Personal History. Women who have had breast cancer and women with a history of breast disease (not cancer, but a condition that may predispose them to cancer) may develop it again.
  4. Family History. The risk of developing breast cancer increases for a woman whose mother, sister, daughter, or two or more close relatives have had the disease. It is important to know how old they were at the time they were diagnosed.
  5. The Breast Cancer Genes. Some individuals, both women and men, may be born with an "alteration" (or change) in one of two genes that are important for regulating breast cell growth. Individuals who inherit an alteration in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene are at an "inherited" higher risk for breast cancer. They also may pass this alteration on to their children. It is very rare. Scientists estimate that only about 5-10 percent of all breast cancers are due to genetic changes. One out of two women with these changes are likely to develop breast cancer. Women with a family history of breast cancer are encouraged to speak to a genetics counselor to determine the pros and cons of genetic testing.

60 minutes in the gym & music

I spent another few hours today at school. I was able to get through another filing cabinet and get rid of a handful of old books. Now, I am not one to throw away books, but when there are books on a shelf with copyrights spanning from 1954-1972, pages ripped, and coloring on some pages, I just had to toss them. They weren't worth saving. Now, if I can get the approval to have a few large items taken from my room, I can actually start re-arranging and getting things organized.

Afterwards I went to the gym. I wanted to get in a good run with some sprints, and then a heavy duty lift session working on arms and legs. By gosh, that is just what I did. Hopefully the lifting today won't affect my swim and pushups tomorrow!

As for the rest of the day, my Dad is in town on business and I look forward to joining him for dinner, a few drinks, and possibly catch the Twins game on tv. They beat the White Sox last night, who are in first place in the AL Central Division; Twins are in second. I am looking forward to them doing it again tonight... and the next.... and the next!

BTW, I don't know how many of you really look at my sidebar. I try to update the video every other day or so with a variety of music that I love to listen to .... if you are looking for something new. What I have up today is one of my favorite punk bands, Something Corporate ... enjoy.

At ease ... but exhausted.

Today was the first day of summer school. I was so flippin' nervous as I didn't feel as prepared as I would have like to have been. You see, when it comes to teaching, I have to be organized and ready with plan A, B, and possibly C. Today, I barely had plan A figured out.

I am used to working with 4th and 5th graders and this summer.. I will be working with 7 year olds ... going into 2nd grade. I didn't know a single student, as none of them were from my school. But, as each an everyone one of them walked into my room, I felt ready and at ease. Plan A went completely out the window. It wasn't worth losing sleep over! The kids were ready to learn. All of them are so different, all 8 of them. They all have their different strengths and weaknesses, so it will be a challenge to group them for reading groups, but I look forward to growing with them over the 6 weeks of summer school.

After the kids got on the bus and I left the school around 11:40, I headed to the gym. It was my intent to run 30 minutes, strength train the legs/core, and then swim a short distance. The gym was packed. All those lunch time workouts. So, I was only able to grab a treadmill for 15 minutes, and made the most of it with some speed. I had to call it quits after a mile because the guy next to me reaked. Honestly. Then I lifted and did some core workout and hit up the pool. I was very slow/tired/sore in the pool. Overall, the workout went good, but I was completely exhausted this afternoon and ended up taking a 2 hour nap! Geez!! What's up with that?!

Check out this video ... it's pretty cute!

Morning workouts

First of all.... guess who is coming to Fargo?

Yeah!

I was up this morning at 4:30am. Should have been up earlier to eat some oatmeal or something because a mile into my run at about 5:15..... I was super hungry and it was oh so distracting. This was what definitely factored into my choice to stop after 2 miles. That and giving me more time to do my strengh training because I didn't know how long it would take. Now I know that I could have run another 15 minutes. I am feeling sore all over... but a good sore. Thankfully tomorrow is a rest day before my big "mini-tri" saturday morning.

I really do enjoy the morning workouts better than the evening. I was able to leave work today and just go home. And that is what I did. With the addition of taking a 1 hour nap. I guess I was tired!

And now I am checking blogs and switching back and forth between the Nuggets game and Grey's Anatomy... Go Nuggets!

Signing off,

Finally Friday

Yesterday I hurried from a day long "meeting/training" to get to spin. Luckily I was able to grab the last of the better bikes. Boo-ya! My training schedule stated that my workout would consist of spin with a 1 mile run afterwards. ... done and done!

This weekend I will be out of town and in the Greater Grand Forks area. The whole-fam-damily will be heading there to catch some hockey! I am SIOUX-per pumped! I promise not to drink too much beer (in one evening) or eat too much (junk food). But, I have to have a grinder from the Red Pepper.... it's a trade mark of the city! It was the best after a night of partying...

Due to being away for the weekend, I squeezed in my workout at the butt crack of dawn today! Can you believe it? This morning's workout was a wonderful nice recovery run and then some brief lifting and ab work. I have on my schedule a 3 mile run tomorrow, but I have given myself the option to save that for sunday if necessary.

Yesterday's Workout:
20.87 mile spin
1.55 mile run

Today's Workout:
2.05 mile run
strength training
abs

Have a great weekend, y'all!

Goodbye October... Hello November

With tomorrow being a rest day, I thought I would take look at some stats from the past few months. Now, one of the reasons why I wanted to attempt Octapolluza was to get back into some sort of schedule and be consistent. With work, I have "settled-in". I have been able to leave work around 4ish instead of 5 or 6 and spending less weekend hours getting organized or caught up, which in return has been a huge help in getting into a regular schedule with the gym. Even though I went above my alotted "1 rest day" per week with Octapolluza (taking a whoppin' 10 rest days out of 31!), I felt this month was quite successful.

AUGUST
  • Running = 17.39 miles
  • Cycling/Spinning = 79.31 miles
  • Swimming = 2150M
SEPTEMBER
  • Running = 20.22 miles
  • Cycling/Spinning = 118.78 miles
  • Swimming = 0
OCTOBER
  • Running = 30.44 miles
  • Cycling/Spinning = 129.03
  • Swimming = 1500M
Now there was definite increase in all areas... except for swimming. The pool was closed for almost 3 weeks in late August and September. Then, it took me a while to get my scared-self to get back in the water. I was dreading the fact that I had to reteach myself how to breath and do the american crawl the appropriate way. But, I got back in there. And... I HEART it. I HEART running...swimming...and cycling... being able to do all three on a regular basis keeps the gym from getting boring... I look forward to the next 14.5 weeks of tri-training! I will still continue to focus on running for the next few weeks to be ready for the big Turkey Trot on Turkey Day... mmm.. I can taste the stuffing, rice, and pumpkin pie already...

Have a great Halloween y'all! And those of you who are parents of littles ones... think of their teachers and having to deal with kids coming off a sugar highs from tomorrow's halloween parties and trick-or-treating candy in the evening. Lucky me, I will have a sub Thursday as us special ed teachers have a day-long meeting to partake in! Yippee!

Day 4

There's not much to report today. After school, I went with a bunch of other sped teachers to grab a margarita and tacos. It was nice to be able to sit and chat and have some down time after school. But I knew that I still needed to get to the gym so I only had one and drank a big glass of water as well. I had a couple errands to run and I finally got to the gym shortly before 7ish. My goal was to get home in time to watch Grey's Anatomy after run and strength workout. Check.

Quick question.... which is better... the tiger tail or the marathon stick?

I know the weekend will be here and gone in the blink of an eye. With that thought, I have been soda-free for a week now! And no withdrawals. Well, their minimal. Since tomorrow is payday, a few of us are going to continue with our tradition of aps-and-taps-on-payday right after school. Thus, I am going to use my one optional rest day for the week, tomorrow. Saturday will consist of a good spin session and possibly more strength training. I am planning to meet some people at a sports bar to watch the Purdue/Ohio State game saturday night. On Sunday I will either run or swim. Oh, and I forgot to mention... I will probably be sneaking into work on saturday for a few hours. But just a few. No worries. I have to start graphing my progress charts and it should only take a short while.

Have a great weekend y'all! And good luck to those running Chicago this weekend!
