Fargo Marathon Weekend Recap

I wasn't going to do a recap becuase I was not 100% happy with how the weekend played out. But, I knew that if I didn't write something up, I would be kicking myself for it. So, here goes.

Fargo Marathon Weekend kicked off with the Youth Run Thursday evening. The weather couldn't have been better with 72 degrees or so, a slight breeze and partly sunny! We had approximately 2,000 little kiddos running either in the 1/2 mile race or 1 mile race. There were kids as little as 2 years old running. It was so exciting to be a part of something like this ... and watching kids fall in love with running!

The forecast for the rest of the weekend wasn't looking nearly as good as it was during the Youth Run. Storms were supposed to roll in Friday, leaving us with 70-80% chance of rain and thunderstorms. Lovely.

Friday evening was the 5K. The plan for me, my sisters, brother-in-law, parents, and another friend was to walk the 5K and then run the Half Marathon the next day as part of the Go-Far Challenge. Well, we walked the 5K and the weather was decent, in the low 60's, but extremely humid. I think it is honestly more painful to walk a 5K than it is to run. It seemed to take us FOREVER to finish.

After Friday night's 5K, I knew I didn't have the Half Marathon in me. I wanted to run it so bad. I knew that I probably could have finished the 13.1 miles even if I had to walk a good chunk of it. But, I knew that I didn't want to injure myself further for lack of quality training. It just wasn't there. So, I made the decision to not run it. I was kind of excited to be on the other side of the race, watching, cheering, and taking photos of family members coming to the finish line.

The weather held out. It was in the low 60's again for the morning events, with a few sprinkles from time to time. Over and over again, I heard so many people saying how the conditions were ideal for half marathoners and marathoners. Cool temps, flat route, tons of fans, music at every mile marker, etc.

The excitement of being a fan on the sidelines soon diminished as everyone took off running and I realized I had a good 2-3 hours of nothing to do. I took some more pictures, ran into people I knew who had finished the 10K, and spent a lot of time thinking about my running. I thought about my poor training, about my struggles with random "injuries" occuring just as things seem to be falling into place, I thought about what my goals are, whether or not I want to attempt the HM distance again... etc.

I have an awesome long-sleeved Half Marathon shirt in my closet that I will probably never wear and it bugs me a lot. I feel like I owe it to myself to redeem myself and get back out there. I want to do another half. Someday.

Overall, the weekend was nice and it was wonderful to spend it with family. My brother-in-law completed his first HM. My sister completed her first since being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and my parents completed there 12th or 13th HM! I am so proud of all of them!!

Three Things Thursday

It's been too long...
  • Stress at work is decreasing! with the end of the year approaching us fast (9 more days after today), things are finally starting to slow down a work a bit. Kinda. Almost all of my paperwork and assessments for the year are done. I just need to compile grades and write up progress reports for IEP's next week. YAY!
  • It's Fargo Marathon Week! The past couple weeks have been super busy with committee meetings. The Youth Run is this evening and we are expecting over 1,300 kids to participate! Friday my sisters, brother-in-law, parents, and a friend will be walking the 5K. Saturday morning almost all of us plan to run the Half Marathon. However, I am not very well-prepared wtih taking a couple weeks off after my longest run of 8 miles. Eeks. AND... the weather doesn't look to promising. Rain will be rolling into the area late tonight and staying until monday with a huge chance of thunderstorms Saturday morning. grrr..
  • Almost Sold! I think it is safe to say I have sold my house, almost. The fourth person to look at it made an offer, I counter offered, she counter offered, and I accepted ... pending an inspection and appraisal. The inspection went will with only having to replace the front door due to wood rotting, and some trimming around another door. A little spending, but it could have definitely been worse. The door has been replaced, I have a little painting to do, and the appraisal needs to be done. We are hoping to close in mid-June! It won't be long before I am back home for good!

Three Things Thursday

1. The house is ready to be sold! This past weekend my fiance, mother, and sister came to town to help me do some things around my house to prep for sale. My personal attendant for the wedding helped out too! In 24 hours we were able to paint a bedroom and a bathroom, clean both, fix the fan in the bathroom, clean windows and kitchen, vacuum and shampoo all rooms but one, run garbage to the city dump, fix the vent cover ouside, and organize and pack up some clutter. Phew. On Sunday I finished shampooing my bedroom, put up curtains in the bedroom and bathroom, cleaned some more, and de-cluttered some more. I met with a realtor last night, filled out paperwork and figured out my asking price. Before he left a lock box was put on the door and a sign is in the yard! Such a good feeling! Let's hope it sells fast!

2. Training is still going .... This half marathon training seems to be on one week, and then off the next. I can't get my running in consistently with everything else that seems to be going on, but I am surviving. Actually, my ankle was acting up again after my 5 miler on Sunday. I was only able to get in 2 miles Tuesday morning. It almost feels arthitic and sending pain up the inside of my shin. However, last night, it felt like a needle was poking me in the back of my lower calf every time I stepped, but my ankle felt better. I might try and run a couple miles tomorrow morning to see how it feels...

3. Wedding planning and getting ready for the move is in full force! In a matter of a month from the engagement we have chosen the date, church, reception location, rehearsal dinner location, attendants, found my dress, found the bridesmaid dresses, chosen the photographer, chosen the DJ, made an offer on a house back home, put my house on the market, put in my resignation at school, applied for a job in two different districts... yada yada.

How's you're week going?

Week 8 HM Training

I finished off week 8 of half marathon training with a nice long 8 miler (on the treadmill). Overall, this week of training was quite successful and I am happy! WEEK 9: HALF MARATHON TRAINING MONDAY (3/21): Run 2.6 mi (30:00) Stretch 10:00 TUESDAY (3/22): Bike 21.6 miles (1:00:00) SSC (25:00) WEDNESDAY (3/23): Shoveling - 1 hour THURSDAY (3/24): Run 4 mi (45:00) Stretch 15:00 FRIDAY (3/25): REST SATURDAY (3/26): REST SUNDAY (3/27): Run - 8 mi (1:32:05) Asside from training, I think we booked our reception/dance site for the wedding this week, and got a bit of a discount on the rental of the ballrooms. The fiance was able to use his charm and get the hospitality room that we are going to use for rehearsal dinner for free! This weekend my parents, as well as my sister and bro-in-law, came to town to help me find my wedding dress! I didn't purchase one, but I found the one I want! I think we also found the dress for the bridesmaids! Exciting! Okay...why can't I get my posts to post right, with correct spacing?! It's all one BIG paragraph!? help?

Snow day and Training

Today was a snow day for us. The weather yesterday afternoon and evening was the weirdest I have ever experienced. Just as our snow was almost gone, it started raining/sleeting yesterday afternoon. Once I got home from work, the lightning and thunder show began. The snow started in the evening and overnight.... leaving us with heavy drifts and a day of no school. I don't know how much snow we got but I think it was close to 10 inches. As happy as I was to have a day off from work - to get work things done at home, I am sad to see us have to make it up Easter monday. Oh well.

I wanted to post my Week 7 of half marathon training... not because it was great, but because I have posted the last 6. Anyone notice that my last two weekly posts said week 5? hehehe.

Week 7 HALF MARATHON TRAINING:

Isn't that sick? What kind of traning is that? Two nights of conferences, another late night at work, and a weekend of wedding planning sure got the best of me. Oh well. That's life. This week is already looking better!

Today's workout was supposed to be BODYPUMP class. Instead I spent over an hour doing a shady job of shoveling. It felt more like I was shoveling sand, instead of snow. That stuff was stinkin' heavy! It was a nice core, back, shoulders, legs, and glutes workout! haha

Updates!

Wow, the past couple of weeks have been quite the whirlwind. I don't know if I am coming or going!

Last week Thursday the fiance, I, and another couple took a nice 4 day/4 night trip to Las Vegas! The weather was a perfect 75 degrees or so each day! We enjoyed some comedy/magic, a cirque du soleil show, dueling pianos, time at the pool, sun and warmth, and lots of good food and drinks. It was my second trip and their first, so it was definitely a new experience!

I cam back to a short week of school, but it has been long enough with evening conferences Tuesday night, and then again tonight. 12 hour days are not my style!

Some of you gave me a hard time for slipping my engagement announcement into my last post as if it wasn't a big deal! Well, I just want to clarify that it is a huge deal! BIG DEAL! I just didn't know how much I wanted to put out there, just yet!

This spring/summer is going to be a busy one with me finishing my spring grad class, starting a summer grad class, finishing out the school year, selling my twinhome, moving back home, finding a new teaching job back home... oh, and planning a late fall wedding! It's going to be an exciting 8 months! The thing that makes me the most nervous right now is trying to sell my home with everything else going on!

With everything going on in the past week or so, training has been so darn sporadic and oftentimes non-existance, but I am hoping next week will be a bit better! I was excited to get in a solid run while in Vegas... I guess we did do a lot of walking!

WEEK 5 HALF MARATHON TRAINING:

My long run on Sunday felt really long. I look forward to backing off a bit this week. Next week I hope to get in a 7.5 miler... but until then, I have a busy-short week before leaving for Las Vegas on Thursday! Woot woot!

Where have I been?

Boy, time sure does fly by when one is having fun! I would like to say this month has been ALL fun, but I would be lying ... it's been fun, crazy busy, extremely stressful, but all is GOOD.

I haven't updated on the last couple weeks of Half Marathon training, so here's what the past two weeks looked like:

Definitely starting out slow, but good...

Week 1 of many for the 5K/Half Marathon training is in the books! Here's what it looked like:

MONDAY (1/31):
Run 2.43 mi (30:00)

TUESDAY (2/1):
Bike 18 mi (50:00)

WEDNESDAY (2/2):
Run .75 mi (10:00)
BODYPUMP (60:00)

THURSDAY (2/3):
Run - 2.6 mi (32:00)
SSC - 25 min

FRIDAY (2/4):
REST - conference out of town

SATURDAY (2/5):
REST - conference out of town

SUNDAY (2/6):
Run 3.36 mi (40:00)
Bike 11.86 mi (35:00)

Overall, the week was pretty good. The only things that I didn't get in that I would have liked was yoga and swimming. But, the week was pretty crazy busy with work and traveling for a conference, so I am pleased with what was accomplished. To top it off, my run on Sunday was the longest run since December and I am happy to say it was completely pain free!

On Friday I had to get up early and drive 75 miles to a conference.... on icy roads. The conference was okay, but I was hoping to get a little more out of the two days of speakers. Oh well.

This coming week is going to be just as busy, if not more. I have an all day training on Tuesday and then leave Thursday after school for Mandan. A handful of us are visiting a couple schools there that are school-wide title schools. Planning for a sub one day is one thing, but two days in one week is just insane. I think my 2nd week of half marathon training will keep me sane!

Sickness & Training

Wednesday I started coming down with something. I couldn't tell if it was cold or allergies related, but as time went on things got a bit worse and I realized it was probably due to spring allergies and has turned into what I think is a sinus infection. I didn't go to the doctor, but I have had my fair share of sinus infections and know one when I see one. Thus, most of my workouts were pretty low key this past week - if I did anything at all - three complete rest days, 52.35 miles on the bike, one 5.8 mile run, and a lot of stretching/abs/core work.

For the past 7 weeks I have been attempting to train for the Fargo Half Marathon. I have been kinda following the Jeff Galloway run/walk program. With that schedule, I was to do 8 miles this weekend and that just didn't happen with this sickness and all. I still have 9 weeks until the Fargo Marathon, and I think I could still train for the half. However, I do have a couple other ideas in mind, depending on how training goes.

Here are 3 options that I am contemplating for the Fargo Marathon this year (depending on how training goes):

Plan A - the Fargo Marathon Challenge = 5K Friday night & Half Marathon Saturday morning.
Plan B - the Fargo Marathon Challenge = 5K Friday night & 10K Saturday morning
Plan C - the Fargo Half Marathon

I have never done a 10K before, and think that the 5K/10K challenge would be something fun but not to strenuous on my body. That is probably the one I am leaning towards the most at this moment. I am able to run 6-7 miles pain free and would like to keep it that way, rather than pushing myself too much right now. I am going to stay optimistic and keep my options open for the next few weeks!

Tomorrow starts week 8 of my "training plan". Instead of typing out what I plan to do each day, I am going to write out what I hope to get accomplished this week. Things get juggled around so much but I hope to accomplish the following:

3 runs - with one 5-6 mile run
2 bikes - one short and one long
2 swims - swim team starts up again this week
1 bodypump class
1 hour of yoga
1 hour of pilates

That is 10 workouts and I know I will have to double up a few days to get them all in this week! Wish me luck! :)

I know many of you had races this weekend and I look forward to reading your race reports!

What are YOU training for? What's your week look like?

Monday, February 15, 2010

A bit of a recap

Last week was week 2 of what I would like to call "Potential Half Marathon Training". I still haven't decided if that's the distance I want to train for in the Fargo Marathon or not, but I am trying to work towards that - juggling getting back into swim team practices and keeping up with my biking and strength training in the process....

Let's see what this past week looked like:

3 complete REST days...
2 swims totally 4100yds...
only 4.2 miles of running - total...
22.67 miles of biking - two separate ocassions...
1 BodyPump session...
a lot of stress at work...
a bit of exhaustion by Friday...
not used to these long swim sessions...
trying to find a the balance...
super sore from BodyPump...
absolutely NO yoga or Pilates...
hoping week 3 will be better....and consistent.

Did you all have a great weekend? Mine was pretty low key, except for a birthday dinner and out for drinks with a few friends! No big Valentine's celebration here.

Are you training for anything? If so, what?

What's with the BA?

I think I have a bad additude about this upcoming triathlon. It will be the last one of the season; shouldn't I be super excited? I am not. I am sure things will be different once I wake up at the butt crack of dawn Saturday morning and drive the 45 minutes to Detroit Lakes for the event. But right now, I kind of just have that "meh" feeling.

Whatev.

School hasn't started back up yet, but I have been in and out of work a lot this week, working on organizing my room and then some paperwork. Next week I am back for 4 days of staff developement and workshops, have 3 days off, and then we start school on the 26th with the kiddos. I am super excited to get back with my kids. Oh how I miss them! (Remember this in a few weeks when I am pulling my hair out. LOL)

After the tri, I am sure I will be consumed with the whirlwind events of transitioning back to school, so I plan to take it pretty easy over the next 2-3 weeks. Workouts will still be there, but no tight schedule or long training sessions.

I have some ideas of what I want to do during the fall to preprare myself for half marathon training after the new year. Yes, I said half marathon training. I think I am going to give the Fargo Half Marathon another chance. Last year I struggled with an injury and was only able to do the 5K. I hope to run a few times a week, swimming and biking once or twice a week, and strength training 2-3 times a week (which will include my Tri Power workouts). Actually, I wouldn't mind trying some of the different classes at the Y (that I proclaimed I didn't have time for while training) - such as Kickboxing, BodyPump, Pilates, Yoga, and Hip Hop Hustle?! Wahoo!

Did I mention that I joined the committe for the Fargo Marathon Youth Run? I think we meet once a month! I am super excited!

Well, I am sure the next time I post I will be writing up a race report after Saturday. I wish everyone who is racing this weekend GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN! That's what's important, right?!

Peace.

Da weekend and shtuff

Week 2 of HM Training:
Monday:
Run 3.25 miles, 37:21, 11:29/mile avg.
Tuesday:
Bike 8.46 miles, 24:22, 20.83mph
Run 1.5 miles, 14:56, 9.57/mile avg.
Wednesday:
REST
Thursday:
Run 3.25 miles, 38:21, 11:48/mile avg.
Friday:
REST
Saturday:
Bike 10 miles, 35:21, 16.97mph (Hill Repeats)
Run 1.27 miles, 15:00, 11:48/mile avg.
Sunday:
Run 7.17 miles, 1:25:00, 11:51/mile avg.

The past week of training went by pretty smoothly. I ended up taking an extra rest day in there, on Friday. I just couldn't get up and to the pool that morning. I had way too much caffiene thursday and really didn't sleep well that night.

My long run today, went a helluva lot better than last week. I took it nice and slow, doing a run 8-9 minute/walk 1 minute ratio. There were absolutely no problems with my knee tracking. I am super stoked!

I can't believe how fast the weekend has gone by. Friday night I went out with a few girl friends to see Hairball play (click this link to see a snipit). For those of you who read my blog and are still unfamiliar with Hairball, they are an 80's rock coverband that dress the part of every song they play. This was probably my fourth time seeing them and they are still fun to watch. There were so many people there, more than usual, and the pushing and shoving in the crowds started too early. It's really annoying; especially when you are standing so close to the stage and you get a splash of beer thrown on you when a girl throws her beer at some random guy. The guy appeared to be completely innocent. The concert was still fun and the music was great!

Saturday afternoon I went up to GF with my parents to catch the Sioux hockey game. We stopped by my aunts for a few hours before the game and enjoyed catching up with everyone. The Sioux beat Denver the Friday night 8-3, but walked away with a tie in overtime last night. They played horribly and are lucky they didn't lose altogether. We are still ranked #2 in the WCHA...

This coming week I am going cut back a bit on my workouts, I think. I plan to get in a couple good swims - one working on endurance and the other working on form and speed, a session on the bike, and a few 3-5 miles runs.

Sense of accomplishment

Despite feeling a tad bit under the weather this past week, and being knee high in paperwork (what's knew?), I had a pretty successful start to my half marathon training. This was my first week of training for the half, the first week of 18.

Some of you may be thinking, why on earth does she need 18 weeks to train for a half?! I am hoping with this extra time I will get in some really good long runs before the race. On top of that, I know that life happens and there will be a week or two where my long run will be cut short due to life in general. This way, I can remind myself that when that happens, this is why I decided to train for 18 weeks!

Week 1 recap:

Monday: Run 3.5 miles, 40:00, 11:25/mile
I got this run in prior to starting the workday and it felt great.

Tuesday: Bike 10.8 miles, 30:00, 21.6mph; Run 1.28 miles, 14:00, 10:56/mile
Today I was beginning to feel a bit under the weather and didn't have as much energy as I hoped. I took it easy on the bike and finished off with a near 15 minutes on the treadmill.

Wednesday: REST
I felt really icky this day. Decided to move my rest day today and take advantage of extra sleep. 10 hours was great!

Thursday: Run 3.64 miles, 40:00, 10:59/mile
This was the first day this week that I felt great and the run proved it with a bit of sprinting.

Friday: Swim 2200M, 45:00, 2:02/100M
On Friday's, the pool is open for lap swim from 4-630pm in the afternoon, so I took advantage of that instead of getting up early that morning. Another 9 hours of sleep Thursday night!

Saturday: Run 5.76 miles, 1:09:22, 12:02/mile
The gym is still busy with new years resolutioners, and I thought I got there early enough to avoid the crowd. I was wrong. I had to break this run into two sessions on the treadmill. During the 15 minutes I had between the two, I did a bit of stretching and abs. My right knee was bothering me a bit. It felt like the knee cap wasn't tracking properly. Instantly I had a feeling of self-doubt about this half marathon, but reminded myself to take it slow and my knees should get used to these longer distances again. Positive thoughts all the way.

Sunday: Swim 3200M, 1:24:00, 2:37/100M (freestyle 500M/kick 100M x 5, 200M c/d)
I had a brick workout (Swim/Bike routine) planned for today, but knew that if I wasn't feeling up for it I would just swim. Yesterday's run left my quads a little sore, a good sore. Instead, I decided just do to a long swim, hoping for around 2000-2200M. When I got in the pool a friend of mine suggested using the kick boards today. So we planned on swimming freestyle 500M and then 100M of kick, times 5. We finished off with a 200M c/d. 2 miles in the pool was exhausting but exhilarating as well!

All in all, I think this past week was pretty successful! I look forward to another great week of training.

Tomorrow the little kiddo's don't have school and us teachers have a staff development day. It will be a nice change of pace. I have a lot of meetings this week and paperwork that needs to be finished. My goal is to get in my workouts in the morning, and stay at work a little bit longer each day, getting as much paperwork and stuff done as I can. I am sick of bringing it home each night, as well as working on it during the weekend. I have plans for next weekend, so it's not going to happen!

Happy Sunday, y'all! Have a great week!

Rest Days

So many of you commented on my training schedule in my last post and were wondering where my rest days were going to fit in. To be honest, I partly forgot and I partly thought the day I did Turbo Sculpt would be enough.

Not smart.

You're all right. I know for a fact that I will need at least one full rest day of no physical activity, especially when I start to increase my long run distance. It's just a given. Don't worry, I will work in those rest days. The last thing I want to deal with is injury.

Today I am taking a complete rest day. This past week has been pretty decent, not up to par, but after a week of little to no workouts, it was a good week. Here's what it looked like:

Monday: Lift upper/lower body
Tuesday: Swim 2200M, 46:00, 2:05/100M
Wednesday: Run 1.30 miles, 15:00, 11:33/mile;
Bike 9.82 miles, 30:00, 19.64mph
Thursday: Turbo Sculpt, 40:00
Friday: Run 3.27 miles, 38:11, 11:40/mile
Saturday: Brick
Swim 1200M, 23:00, 1:54/100M
Bike 21.34, 1:05:00, 19.69mph

When I look over my schedule for the next coming week, taking into consideration afternoon meetings at work and other extra curricular activities, here is what my week will hopefully look like:

Monday: Swim
Tuesday: Run 3-4 miles
Wednesday: Bike/15 minute run-off
Thursday: Run 3-4 miles (AM)
Turbo Sculpt (PM)
Friday: REST
Saturday: Long Run (5-6 miles)
Sunday: Swim/Bike Brick

If I am too worn out or sore by Sunday, the Brick will just turn into a swim. We'll see how this week goes!

Happy Sunday, y'all!

What's it gonna look like?

First of all.....

Happy Birthday Mom!...
Love, your little angels.... Steph, Susan, & Me

On the training front...again. I think I have figured out what I would like to do with this training business.

A typical week will look something like this:

Monday: Swim (long)
Tuesday: Run 3-4 miles
Wednesday: Spin/15 min. run-off
Thursday: Run 3-4 miles
Friday: AM Yoga/Turbo Sculpt
Saturday: Swim (short)/Spin BRICK
Sunday: Long Run

Obviously this is bound to change with weekends away and such, so things will just have to get shuffled around a bit.

If all goes as I would like, I will be able to get in a handful of 10-14 mile runs in March and April. For the rest of January and into February, I will slowly get used to the longer runs on the weekends, averaging 5-9 miles only. Some strength training (including turbo sculpting) will be incorporated in there, probably on the shorter run days.

Last year, I did most of my long runs on Saturdays and I really liked that. I was able to get to the gym early Saturday morning before it was busy and didn't have to worry about sticking to a 30 minute sign-up time. Sunday's the gym doesn't open as early, so I might be switching this with my brick workouts later on.

If anything gets cut out of my weekly workout, it will be either my Spin/Run-off session, or the Brick workout. If anything one might just be cut in half, preventing any injury. With this Half Marathon, I still want to keep a good base with my swimming and cycling, but will cut back if I need to.

Alright, there it is. I promise my next post will not be about this training. I just needed to get this figured out for my sanity. Ha!

Have a great weekend, y'all!

Today's Workout:
Run 3.27 miles,
38:11, 11:40/mile

Training thoughts and such

Thanks to everyone who gave me their two cents in regards to my training plans for my upcoming half marathon. If you haven't read my post, you can check it out here. Feel free to give me any advice you have.

I think I knew what I wanted to do already. I just am trying to decide what to do for my long runs. I woudn't mind trying to do a couple long runs more than 13 miles. I guess I can just start upping my miles and listen to my body and see how it goes. But, like I said, that is still 19 weeks away and plenty of time to think about it.

I did want to clarify one thing. Some of you commented on me motivating my family to join me. I don't think I motivated them. My parents have run more half marathons than I have raced. They have motived me. And Steph has been wanting to train for a half marathon, and I am glad she has bit the bullet and will be joining us on the dark side! LOL.

Yesterday, I DID make it to the pool for a nice morning swim. In fact I could have gone further, but the pool was getting too busy. So after 45 minutes I canned it and went to work early.

This morning in the process of getting ready for work, I stubbed my 2nd and middle toe against my bathroom door, as I was opening it. I compared the pain to childbirth. I know I haven't had any children yet, but I can assume that the pain was similar. My toes kept rubbing in my shoes all day and when I went to the gym I dreaded getting on the treadmill. It felt okay to run, but I think my gait was off a bit as I was trying to avoid pushing off those toes. So I stopped after 15 minutes and hopped on the bike to do some hill repeats. Now, that my friends, was fun.

I have been having a hard time keeping up with blogs lately, only getting to read a few here and there, but I hope to catch up a bit in the next few days!

Yesterday's Workout:
Swim 2200M
, 46:00, 2:05/100M

Today's Workout:
Run 1.3 miles, 15:00, 11:30/mile
Bike 9.82 miles, 30:00, 19.64mph (hill repeats)

Half Marathon Training will begin in....

Let the countdown begin! In less than 19 weeks I will be participating in the Fargo Half Marathon once again!

The difference this time? I won't be doing it alone! Both my parents, and Steph, will be joining me in the half marathon, and my youngest sister Susan will be walking the 5K with a friend!

This race will most likely be my first race of 2009. I was thinking about doing another indoor triathlon the end of February, but might just save the $35 and put it towards an outdoor tri this summer. You can't find much else for races in these parts this time of year...

With this thought, I have been looking over training plans and my schedule and other training plans and my schedule. You get the point. I guess this is my time to ask you, fellow bloggers, what kind of plan do you like to use?

For last year's race, I used the Jeff Galloway plan and liked it. The longest run I did prior to the half marathon was just a little over 10 miles and that was 3 weeks before the race. Even though I was able to finish the 13.1 miles, I suffered immensely through the last 5 miles or so because of nasty blisters (mostly self inflicted due to the poor choice in changing socks for race day). My quads and calves were very sore for the few days to follow.

In a perfect world, my weekly training schedule would consist of 3 runs (2 short, 1 long), 2 swims (1 long and one short whether it is part of a brick session or not), and 1-2 bike rides. I would really like to keep up with my swimming and cycling as much as I can. I think it is a great form of cross training, even if they are shorter sessions. I would also like to do some more strength training and yoga.

Any ideas? Tips? Thoughts on how to juggle this sensibly?

What has worked for you? What hasn't worked for you?

Any suggestions or comments in regards to what you like and have found to work for you, would be much appreciated!

The next big thing...

Just signed up for this Half Marathon... again!

....MAY 9th, 2009!

....looks like I got Sister Steph, and my parental units to join as well. Sister Susan will be doing the 5K with a friend.

Now I am off to bed. I need to hit the pool at 530am with a friend prior to heading home to the Biz for a 5 day weekend! Peace out, homies!
