Inquiring

Dear Lovely Legs of Mine,

The past two weeks of training have been wonderful. Yes, there have been a couple runs where I thought I was wasting my time and struggled immensely to get through them. But, I took my time, took it easy, and completed my workouts.

Sunday I had a glorious 7+ mile run on the treadmill. The treadmill itself left little to be desired. The same goes for the two televisions in my line of view. But, my breathing was on, and you felt strong. It wasn't until after 5 miles that I was starting to feel the slightest bit sore. Mind you, it was a good sore, and you were the first to remind me of that. However, you persevered and finished strong.

I took Monday off. My overall body was tired. I was exhausted, and it was probably mostly due to improper post-run nutrition Sunday. I gave you, as well as my arms, a complete rest day - no pool, no bike. You are welcome.

Yesterday I swam. You and I both know that swimming is a great upper body workout, and at most, you will become a little tired after extensive kick sessions. That was not the case this day. By no means, were you overworked.

Today, I slept in, giving you an extra 12 hours to "rest up" in preparation for a short, easy run this evening. Unfortunately, the only thing that you were able to provide me with was a short run. It was horrible, and you didn't like the fact that I was putting extra pressure on you. Forgive me, I am sorry.

What do you want from me?

I don't know if your muscles are weak, or if I am "over-using" you, or if I need to switch to new shoes. I am going to rest a few days. I do want, and need, you in tip-top shape for the half marathon in a few months and if that means me taking a few extra days away from running this early in the game, I will sacrifice that. And when I decide it is time for you and I to run, we will be trying new shoes. Maybe that tangible reward will please you.

Until then, we will be keeping ourselves busy in the pool and on the bike. This is a relationship that goes both ways. I give a little bit, and you will do the same. Right?

Signing off,

Sore Stacy

If I were your legs, I'd be cooperating with you right now. I'm with you on this...know exactly how you feel. Wish our legs could talk!

I hope the legs receives this with love and not get all defensive.

BTW, don't you hate it when your doing "all the right things" but still can't put your finger on what's going on?

i have to remind my legs all the time what they are trying to do. it's ok, they will eventually get the message.

oh, and i'm still ROFL about your last comment about north and south dakota ganging up on MN. that's too funny. North and south carolina def compete, but we also have a universal hatred of virginia. screw them. it's funny, SC people think NC is full of crazy people, but NC people love SC. I am an NC person who is currently stuck in SC. These people are driving me nuts.

I so want that leg in the pic! Give them rest girl, if for some reason the rest is not working. I know you don't want to hear this but a little cycling break is a good rest for them too.

Awesome post. When did you last switch your shoes? When I'm getting extra sore with running it usually means time for a new pair.

I have conversations like this all the time, glad it's not just me. I swear my body and I are finally learning to communicate better

You know, that's the love and hate of running...you can do 3 hard days and an easy run and still feel good and you can rest for a day or two and have a hard day and legs feeling like jello. I don't get it!
