I think it's dying

I think my laptop (MAC) has seen it's last life.

*sniff, sniff*

For the past couple months, I have had the feeling that it has some sort of virus... I was only able to use certain web browsers (ie. Safari, Firefox) with certain websites, no matter how much I updated programs.

But last night it had done something it had never done before. It froze. Completely. I couldn' even move the mouse. I have never ever seen that happen on a MAC before! Then, when I would shut it down and turn it back on, it would only get me so far; sometimes just to the login page, sometimes just a blue screen, sometimes completely logged on, but if I got that far and opened up a web browser, it would freeze.

I don't know what to do! It is 4 years old. I HEART my laptop.

Right now I am able to use my school laptop, thank goodness. But, I am not able to do anything with music or pictures on here, or messenger. *gasp*

Any ideas what it could be? What does a girl do? Is it worth spending the big bucks to get it fixed? Or is it a goner? I suppose the next step is contacting some computer place that can help me.

On a postive and completely different note, tomorrow is Friday already, payday, AND Hairball is in town! What could be more exciting?

Today's Song (to prepare for tomorrow's coverband): Loverboy - Workin' For the Weekend
(The lead singer of Hairball does this song, and wears the red outfit!)

Sorry I don't have any MAC experience, but if it was a PC there are a couple things I would do. 1st it definitely seems like a software issue. I'm assuming all the virus scanners come out clean. Clean out all temporary files, clear internet history, cookies, etc. If you have created a backup, try to restore it. If you are really desperate, you can always reinstall the operating system. Had to do that to my mom's computer and now its better than new! Sorry I can't be of more help :(

Oh, no...poor 'puter. Our old iMac (one of those white flatscreen G4s that looks kind of like half a basketball with a sideview mirror off the top) kinda gave up the ghost in a similar fashion. After installing some cheap kids' software it was never the same. We uninstalled all traces of the software, uninstalled and re-installed the OS...never could get it to work right again. OS X crashes at random, especially when adjusting the volume or ejecting a disc. Online I found some references to a bad keyboard causing such issues, so we even replaced the keyboard, but that made no difference.

By the time all this happened it was no longer our primary computer, but it still stinks. It would be a perfect computer for our son (7) to use, otherwise.

Hope you find a solution. It probably is worth having someone look at--laptops are so $$ to replace.

Sorry my knowledge of technical things extends to "turn it off/then turn it back on"; if that doesn't work, I'm screwed.

A Virus on a mac? Those are RARE!!! Viruses are usually only created for PC's and that's one of the selling points for Macs.

Yikes, can't help you on MAC, hope you get it all cleaned up and running good as new!

How close do you live to a Mac store?

I'm sorry chica, I'm a 'puter mo-ron. No help here.

But I'm going to kill you with that song. ARRRGHHHHHHH LOL I remember last year David (you know David and Mendy LOL) got that baby stuck in my head for about a week. I hate it :P

You have to schedule an appointment anyway before you make that type of drive since there is always a huge waiting line.

Poor computer. :( I have very little Mac knowledge, so I can't offer any suggestions. I hope someone is able to help you though!

Don't give up hope. Can you find a local retailer that deals with repairing Macs? Typically, Macs are known for lasting much longer.

I know nothing about Macs (I HATE them), so sorry to be of no help. I hope you get things figured out!

I dont know anything bout MACS, but does it have any sort of restore disk to reload the O/S and S/W?

After four years, its definitely time to sooth your hurt feelings with a new Mac :-) Doctor's orders!!

That stinks, I'm a dumby when it comes to computer problems. I would say that if you have a virus scanner thingy, try that and see if you have a virus.

I'm so excited for it to be Friday too! WAHOO!

Good luck w/ the computer issue.

Love my Mac and couldn't live without it. Have you called tech support yet? Run any virus programs? Looked up info on the Apple site? I would try all of those, back up what you can and maybe do a reinstall from the disk. Boy I sound all techy..lol
Good luck with your computer!

Sorry this happened. Maybe a new one is in order? Happy Friday!

Sorry to hear about your laptop! I have a MacBookPro and haven't had problems so far, but for other Mac products, their support crew in local outlets have been great. Most times Macs seem to act to protect themselves by shutting down or going into a type of safe-mode. Could that be it? Viruses on a Mac are so rare though.... I hope you get it solved!

Blue screens are never good. I would take it to the Apple Store if there is one close. Otherwise, it may be time to buy a new one.

If you live by an Apple Store I would take it in. If not I would call Apple up and see what they suggest.

I'm sorry to hear your Mac is ill... my first suggestion would be to take it in (if you are close to an Apple store). If the prognosis is bad, maybe it's time to upgrade?

P.S. I *heart* my Mac - I'd be devastated if it crashed.

Sorry to hear about your Mac! The
Apple gurus (or whatever they call themselves) are suppose to be very good... not that I know anything about computers. :)

When ever I have a computer problem like this, I usually hear from all the Mac users "you should have bought a Mac, that never happens to them." Hmmmm, I guess they were wrong.

Seriously, it is probably best to take it in to a service shop. They will be able to hook it up and diagnose whether or not it can be fixed.

buying a new laptop is fun, but expensive. i guess it depends on what it would take to get it fixed

Ha! My computers (both of them) have been dying for months! My laptop is slow and doesn't shut down. Oh, and the "i" button stopped working recently. Yes, I wore out the "I" on my computer. Ah, the irony.

Danielle said...

Hope you figured something out with the laptop...considering the price for a Mac, it might be worth fixing...

Hairball is fun.

That's funny (not that your laptop is dying) but the fact that you said it's getting a virus. One of the secretaries told me just this morning that they bought a MAC and the salesman said they can't get viruses.....and she believed him!!!
